After nearly 80 days of total blockade of humanitarian assistance, families in Palestine are seeing glimmers of hope as they face extreme hunger and risk of starvation. A handful of bakeries are now operational in south and central Gaza; we need far more up and running across Gaza, for us to push back hunger.

While some aid is finally beginning to reach those in desperate need, the pace is far too slow ¡ª 17³Ô¹Ïurgently needs expedited permissions and unrestricted access to collect and distribute food. Families are hanging on by a thread, and conditions on the ground are horrific.

The entire Gaza Strip is at high risk of famine as fighting has surged again, border crossings are still closed, and food is dangerously scarce. Hunger and malnutrition have intensified sharply since all aid was blocked from entering on 2 March, reversing the clear humanitarian gains seen during the ceasefire earlier this year.

17³Ô¹Ïreports that food and nutrition distributions for over 220,000 people have started in Tawila, North Darfur ¨C where hundreds of thousands are seeking refuge from horrific violence in and around El Fasher and Zamzam IDP Camp. The upcoming rainy season and funding shortfalls could threaten recent progress in turning the tide of famine ¨C at a time when 17³Ô¹Ïurgently needs to be scaling up to pre-stock food before roads become flooded and impassable, and ahead of the lean season when hunger is expected to surge.

Today, 17³Ô¹Ïdelivered the last remaining food stocks to hot meals kitchens it supports in the Gaza Strip. These kitchens will run out of ingredients by the end of the month. No humanitarian or commercial supplies have entered Gaza for more than seven weeks as all main border crossing points remain closed. This is the longest closure the Gaza Strip has ever faced, exacerbating already fragile markets and food systems.

17³Ô¹Ïis urgently calling for unimpeded access to immediately preposition food assistance across key locations in Sudan, as deliberate obstruction by parties on the ground and the approaching rainy season threaten to render vast areas of the country inaccessible by road. Without swift action, 17³Ô¹Ïwarns that millions of vulnerable people could be cut off from life-saving aid, placing fragile humanitarian gains at serious risk.

Within 48 hours of the powerful earthquake that struck central Myanmar on the 28th of April, the United Nations 17³Ô¹Ï (WFP) began emergency food distributions to affected communities. 17³Ô¹Ïhas so far reached 15,000 earthquake survivors in four impacted states and is scaling up efforts to assist 850,000 affected people.

Concerns are mounting as violence escalates rapidly in and around Goma, the provincial capital of eastern DRC. In a city of one million plus people, food and water supplies are running low ¨C the next 24 hours are crucial. Several 17³Ô¹Ïwarehouses have been looted; teams are taking stock of what we will need to locally procure and transfer by road to make sure we have provisions once we resume operations in the critically affected areas.

17³Ô¹Ïbrought 10,130 tonnes of food into Gaza in the last week ¨C more in the first eight days of the ceasefire than in the previous month. Food entered Gaza through all available border crossings from Jordan, Israel and Egypt without incident. 17³Ô¹Ïaims to reach one million people each month for the next three months.

The first 17³Ô¹Ïtrucks have started crossing from Egypt into Gaza. 17³Ô¹Ïaims to get at least 150 trucks into Gaza on a daily basis if conditions allow, to provide immediate food aid such as wheat flour and ready-to-eat meals and also to support local food production, re-stock bakeries, and provide nutrition supplements for thousands of children.

A ceasefire in Gaza is long overdue. Life is on pause for over two million people without access to proper food, water, shelter, and education. Despite continuous humanitarian efforts to deliver life-saving aid, it is impossible to meet people¡¯s needs in the current scenario of conflict, insecurity, and restrictions.

17³Ô¹Ïis scaling-up its operations in Haiti to meet escalating food needs in the face of a hunger crisis driven primarily by violence and displacement.
More than 50,000 Haitians have been displaced in the past two weeks alone due to insecurity related to armed groups, while across the country, 5.4 million people are facing acute hunger ¨C one of the highest per capita proportions of food insecurity worldwide.

The humanitarian response in Gaza is nearing collapse as the threat of famine gets closer. The breakdown of law and order and disregard for international humanitarian principles are placing humanitarian staff, operations and the people of Gaza at increasing risk. 17³Ô¹Ïand partner humanitarian agencies need solutions that address the breakdown of law and order, and for all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law to allow for the safe passage of aid.

Three convoys are heading to critical hunger hotspots ¨C famine-hit Zamzam camp (North Darfur) and Kadugli (South Kordofan). These shipments mark the beginning of what is expected to be the largest food aid operation since start of the conflict.

The risk of famine will persist throughout Gaza this winter unless fighting stops and more humanitarian aid reaches families, according to a new food security assessment by experts from 16 UN agencies and NGOs. Twelve months of fighting have decimated livelihoods, drastically reduced food production and severely restricted both commercial and humanitarian supply lines, the report said.

Escalating violence has led to mass displacements within Lebanon, requiring 17³Ô¹Ïto scale up its emergency food assistance to reach up to one million

Seasonal rains and floods in Sudan and its neighbours (Chad, South Sudan, Libya) are adding another layer of misery for hungry families displaced by Sudan¡¯s war and complicating WFP¡¯s humanitarian response as convoys of lifesaving food are affected by flooded roads and destroyed bridges.

The first 17³Ô¹Ïfood supplies destined for 13,000 people at risk of famine in Sudan¡¯s Darfur have crossed the Adre border from Chad, after it was reopened by the Sudanese authorities following a six-month closure.
